Essential But Undervalued: How DSP Shortages Are Impacting Lives in California

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) workforce crisis is a growing concern in California.

CPCIDD’s latest report, “The Impact of the Direct Support Professional Workforce Shortage on Individuals and Families Served by the Regional Center System in California,” highlights the severity of this issue. The report examines how the shortage of DSPs affects individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families.

DSPs provide essential support. They help individuals with IDD live independently, access employment, and participate in their communities. However, low wages, high turnover, and burnout have created a critical shortage of these professionals.

Key findings from the report include:

– Over 458,000 individuals with IDD rely on services coordinated by California’s Regional Center System.

– The DSP workforce shortage significantly  limits access to housing, employment, and social opportunities for individuals with IDD.

– Families face increased stress and reduced quality of life due to the lack of available support.

The report also offers actionable recommendations to address this crisis:

– Pay DSPs a competitive wage base on the skill set required for the job.

– Provide better training and career development opportunities.

– Raise awareness about the importance of the DSP profession.
